Resources and Opportunities : Small-Diameter Wood Supply Analysis

In February 2008, in response to growing interest in building agreement on cost-effective ways to improve forest health while supporting appropriate-scaled industry, a broad coalition of stakeholders completed a multi-jurisdictional study of wood supply in northern Arizona, focusing on ponderosa pine. The 7-month collaborator-driven analysis:

  • Identifies the specific acres within the study area that are available and suitable for forest restoration efforts.
  • Determines what forest restoration outcomes are most appropriate for individual, defined areas.
  • Builds agreement on the range of forest restoration treatments most fitting for those individual locations and areas.
  • Develops a spatial layer of wood volume (by size class) for the entire study area and estimate the amount of wood supply targeted and available for removal.
  • Determines the sustainability levels that can be achieved.
