Resources and Opportunities : Health Coverage for Micro-Businesses

Securing affordable health insurance is a top priority for micro-business owners. Of the estimated 45 million Americans without health insurance today, 60 percent—24 million—are from families in which the head of household is self-employed or working for a small business. The National Association of the Self-Employed (NASE), the largest nonprofit, nonpartisan association of its kind in the United States, publishes “A Guide to Understanding Health Coverage for Micro-Businesses” and offers a free on-line step-by-step health care assessment tool. For more information, please visit http://health.NASE.org/.

In Arizona, Freelancers Union offers health insurance from UnitedHealthcare's Golden Rule Insurance Company. The plans are individual market plans, which means that you deal directly with the insurance company for everything from application to paying your monthly premium and checking up on claims. Freelancers Union doesn't have any eligibility requirements for the plans through Golden Rule, but rates and coverage can vary based on your medical history.
