Actions in Progress : Model Energy Codes

The Model Energy Code (MEC) is a national minimum standard for energy efficient residential construction developed by the Council of American Building Officials. MEC sets minimum energy standards for a new home’s envelope, and mechanical systems based upon the area’s climate. MEC is flexible in that it allows trade-offs between insulation levels, windows, and heating and cooling systems. Air sealing of the building envelope and of the ducts are also required.

Action steps include:

  • Support the adoption of a Model Energy Code in the City of Flagstaff.
  • Support the adoption of a Model Energy Code in the incorporated areas of Coconino County.
  • Support the adoption of a Model Energy Code in the County's unincorporated areas.
  • Work with local governments and other interested parties to educate the public about the benefits of model energy codes.
