Actions in Progress : Education in Use of Green Materials
Many excellent courses in construction technology are offered at Coconino Community College (CCC), but the building industry continues to lack workers who have comprehensive training in the use of green materials and products. A seamless educational pipeline of career opportunities in green building principles and methods needs to begin with joint vocational training at northern Arizona high schools, continue through an enhanced Green Building curriculum at CCC, and culminate in a degree program in Sustainable Building at Northern Arizona University.
Action steps include:
- Support C.A.V.I.A.T.'s efforts to obtain matching funding from the Arizona State Legislature for Joint Vocational Districts. Review existing approved course work at the state level in green building curricula for joint vocational training.
- Encourage the Coconino Community College Board of Directors to support the proposed Green Building curriculum and Associates Degree Program.
- Seek support from the NAU administration and from the Ponderosa Group (a faculty group in support of greening the curriculum) for a Batchelor's degree program in Sustainable Building at the university.
- Seek a resolution of support for all Green Building curriculla and programs from the County Board of Supervisors and the Flagstaff City Council.
- Seek support for a full suite of adult enrichment classes in applied sustainability at CCC.
